Rogue One Cast Announced

Rogue One cast
Rogue One promotional still

Rogue One, the first of the Star Wars spinoff films, was formally announced this weekend. Principle photography has begun, and its release date has been set as December 16th, 2016. Additionally, the cast has been announced. The description of the film on Wookiepedia reads: A band of resistance fighters unite for a daring mission to steal the Death Star plans in the Star Wars Anthology film, Rogue One.

We know the director and the main cast (at least, on the Rebel side), so let’s explore the future, together, hand-in-hand, to a bright tomorrow.

If the name of director Gareth Edwards doesn’t ring the loudest of bells, don’t blame yourself. His previous directing credits, aside from Rogue One, include End Day, a TV movie, two episodes from documentary series Perfect Disasters, one episode from documentary series Heroes and Villain, a short named Factory Farmed, films Monsters and Godzilla, and is expected to return for Godzilla 2. He also has a history of visual effects, writing, producing, and a number of other positions within the movie-making business.

As for our on-screen personalities, there are some fresh faces and established names. Perhaps most well-known is Alan Tudyk and his carefree character Wash on cult sci-fi show Firefly. He’s also appeared in A Knight’s Tale, Frozen, I, Robot, Wreck-it Ralph, Arrested Development, Big Hero 6, and starred in Tucker and Dale vs. Evil. Also well-known is Forest Whitaker, famous for his portrayal of Idi Amin in The Last King of Scotland.

Other names include Diego Luna, who has been in Elysium, The Book of Life, Milk, and The Terminal, Mads Mikkelsen, who played Le Chiffre in the James Bond film Casino Royale, as well as the titular cannibal in the TV series Hannibal, Donnie Yen, martial artist and star of the stellar Ip Man films, as well as appearing in Blade II and classic martial arts movie Hero. Ben Mendelsohn appeared in Killing The Softly, The Place Beyond the Pines, Exodus: Gods and Kings, and was corrupt corporate executive Roland Dagget (“Do you feel in control?”) in The Dark Knight Rises. Felicity Jones, recently garnering widespread acclaim for her role in The Theory of Everything, has also appeared in True Story, Like Crazy, and The Amazing Spider-Man 2, among others.

Joining this strong cast are lesser-known actors Riz Ahmed best known for Four Lions, Jonathon Aris, a frequent TV actor in shows such as Humans, The Game, and Sherlock, and Wen Jiang, known primarily for Devils on the Doorstep, Let the Bullets Fly, and The Sun Also Rises. Will Rogue One have Stormtroopers, you ask? Fear not! Leigh Holland, “Bar Customer” in One Crazy Thing, “Alien Prisoner” (Uncredited) in Guardians of the Galaxy, and U.S. Soldier (uncredited) in Captain America: The First Avengers, among other similarly illustrious roles, will be a Stormtrooper.

We’re all in a tither about Episode VII at the moment, but once that hot fervor dies, Rogue One will be the next big thing for Star Wars fans. We eagerly look forward to new information about it. Thanks for reading! Come back next week for more fun fan and costume information, and don’t forget to enter out Halloween Sweepstakes!

Darth Vader: Star Wars’ Tragic Villain

Darth Vader tragic
Vader’s Remorse by Joe Corroney

In a strange reversal of how things normally go, today we’re going to be talking about something from the original trilogy improved by the prequels: Darth Vader’s status as a tragic villain.

The concept of a tragic villain is a simple one. The villain, the one acting against the hero or heroes, certainly does bad things, but his reasons for doing so stem from pain or tragedy. Perhaps the villain did something terrible and knows it. Perhaps the villain in question is being forced to fight the heroes, and either doesn’t want to or has no knowledge of his actions. Classic examples include Carrie‘s titular psychic (driven mad by teasing), Mr. Freeze (commits evil only as a way to heal his sick wife), and, of course, the vampire from Blacula (knows vampires are evil and regrets feeding on people, even if just to stay alive).

In the original Star Wars trilogy Darth Vader is presented as a dangerous adversary, a villain the heroes must defeat, and eventually is revealed to be Luke Skywalker’s father. His story ends at his death and his turn from the dark side to the light side, rebelling against the Emperor and dying as a Jedi. However, knowledge gained from the prequel changes this end from one where Darth Vader simply becomes a good guy, to one where he finds redemption in himself.

In the prequels, Darth Vader’s pre-armored stage goes from the chosen one, the Jedi destined to restore balance to the force, to a Sith warrior out for blood, blinded by anger and worry for his loved ones. He is so twisted by his fear, and by Emperor Palpatine, he is tricked into killing his wife (and believing he’s killed his child), murdering dozens or hundreds of Jedi, and fighting his mentor and greatest friend. After this event, and after his full transformation to Darth Vader, he is told his actions have resulted in Padme’s death — and they have, but not before his children are born. He joins the age of the growing Galactic Empire believing he has destroyed everything he sought to protect, and believes himself without redemption. It would be far too much from him, and without purpose, to become a good person once more.

So when not only is Darth Vader’s son revealed to be alive — not to mention his daughter — but the son fights him and begs him to become good once again, Darth Vader is paralyzed by choice. He makes his decision to throw down the Emperor, resulting in both of their deaths, because there is now something to fight for: his son’s life, his daughter’s life, and, he comes to realize, his life.

So Darth Vader is the series’ tragic villain, but how does this change the movie? For one, it places more of the burden of villainy on Emperor Palpatine. It makes his character much more evil, and at the same time makes Anakin’s fall to the dark side all the more sad. He believes he is beyond repair when he isn’t, but he has no idea.

Nien Nunb Character Corner

Nien Nunb
Nien Nunb

Born on the caves of his homeworld Sullust, lovably goofy-looking Nien Nunb went from a pilot to a smuggler to a war hero, and you’re about to learn about him.

Nien Nunb became a pilot for the SoroSuub freight corporation. As the company started allying itself with the Galactic Empire, Nunb and his childhood friend Sian Tevv, a politician, founded a group to fight against the Empire and SoroSuub, independent of the Rebels. The corporation retaliated against the group with a Star Destroyer, but even this didn’t hinder Nunb.

Joining the Rebel alliance, Nunb was chosen by Lando Calrissian as co-pilot of the Millennium Falcon during the attack on the second Death Star, receiving the Kalidor Crescent for heroism. He would again co-pilot the ship while Chewbacca was spending time with family on Kashyyyk. Han was initially suspicious of the Sullustan’s skills, but his respect grew during their mission; Nunb even saved Han’s life from a Stormtrooper.

In 13 ABY, Nien was made administrator of the Kessel spice mines after Calrissian purchased it. Nien was able to increase the profits from the mine by replacing the slave labor with species that preferred to live underground, such as his own. During the Yuuzhan Vong invasion, Nien increased the defenses of the mines enough to hold off attackers. Decades later, Nien was able to assist Ben Skywalker finding a Sith apprentice, and the name of the ship she rode.

Nien Nunb was portrayed by a puppet for Return of the Jedi, controlled by Mike Quinn and Richard Bonehill, operating the face and body respectively. The name comes from the fact that the character was “number Nine” on the packing list. Voiced by Kipsang Rotich, from Kenya, Nien speaks the Kenyan language Haya, as well as Kikuyu, another Kenyan dialect.
