Forever: Disney’s Plan for Star Wars

Can Star Wars continue forever?Traditionally, more is better. More time to sleep is better than less time to sleep. A greater amount of cottage cheese is better than less cottage cheese. More time before hitting the ground after leaping out of an exploding plane is better than less. So, more Star Wars should be better than less Star Wars, right? (Insert your own prequel trilogy joke here) Let’s assume yes, because we like Star Wars. Here’s the question we want to pose: could we ever run out of Star Wars? Can Star Wars continue forever?

We have already seen two large-screen examples of new Star Wars goodness since Disney purchased it, Episode VII in 2015, and Rogue One in 2016. This year, we get Episode VIII (“The Last Jedi”), and next year is the Han Solo anthology story. 2019 gives us Episode IX, and 2020 is—supposedly—when the Boba Fett movie will arrive. Beyond that, plans are in place for movies extending through 2030. What other stories will Disney show us?

Will they opt to continue to sew new plots out of thin air? Will they take stories from the old Expanded Universe, such as the Yuuzhan Vong, Thrawn, or Dark Empire? Perhaps we’ll see more anthologies, such as origin stories for Obi-Wan Kenobi, Yoda, or other favorites?

Star Wars Can Go Forever

If Disney had its say, Star Wars would go forever, for a simple reason: that sweet cash, yo. The Force Awakens earned over two billion dollars, and Rogue one has earned more than one billion, amounts of money known as Scroogian. Disney wants to dive in and never hit bottom, and there’s no reason to stop making movies—and, hence, stop making money—if people are still going to movies and buying merchandise. Star Wars is the biggest name in Hollywood, and they will always have top talent to pick and choose from.

Did you know Daniel Craig, the latest James Bond, was in The Force Awakens? He was the Stormtrooper Rey manipulates on Starkiller base. A world-renowned actor played a faceless bit part because it’s Star Wars. Directors will fight each other to the death to direct the next installation. Unknown actresses will line up around the block to become the next Daisy Ridley.

With these facts, Star Wars has staying power like none other. Maybe it will continue forever. Would it be so bad?

Sabine Wren Leads Rebels Season 3

Ezra and Sabine gracing the season three posterThe third season of Star Wars Rebels debuts on September 24th, and it promises exciting adventures and classic action to rival the previous two seasons. Main characters Ezra Bridger and Sabine Wren will lead us through the events following the end of season two: Kanan Jarrus’ blindness, and Ahsoka Tano’s death. Season three also promises a fan-favorite in the form of Grand Admiral Thrawn. This brilliant and analytical leader is featured in the famous Timothy Zahn Expanded Universe novels. The crew of the ghost, now with a base on the planet Atollon, must contend with the Empire’s growing power and escape the unbeatable Thrawn.

Sabine and Ezra’s new roles

After his meeting with former Sith Lord Darth Maul, Ezra has become closer to the dark side. His anger has come to the front. After the respective death and blindness of Ahsoka and Kanan, he is determined to not let anything hurt his friends. Thanks to the influence of the Sith Holocron, Ezra now fights more aggressively. Fights against stormtroopers ends in death instead of just injuries. With his long locks cut and his focus on defeating the empire, it’s clear we have a new leader in Ezra.

Furthermore, Sabine Wren looks to take on an even larger role. The rebel fleet comes to rely on her more and more as the danger increases. Her armor and hair color may be different, but her skills remain fresh. With Thrawn on the other side of the table, will she be able to triumph?

Marc Buhaj, senior vice president of programming and the general manager of Disney, said: “We are proud to bring our audience a third season of Star Wars Rebels, a series that has resonated across generations.” Buhaj added, “The creative team behind the series continues to do a brilliant job in delivering on the key tenets that fans have come to expect from a Star Wars property including adventure, hope and the battle between good vs. evil.”

Star Wars Land Details

Star Wars Land concept art
Star Wars Land

On August 15th, 2015, Disney CEO Bob Iger announced the development of Star Wars Land at the D23 Expo in Anaheim. Star Wars land will show up at both Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World, each park will encompass 14 acres, and construction for both is slated to begin in April of 2016. “Star Wars Land” is, for now, an unofficial title.

Bob Chapek, chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, said the land will “introduce you to a Star Wars planet you’ve never seen before – a gateway planet located on the outer rim, full of places and characters familiar and not so familiar.” Iger has stated the attractions and entertainment will be physical storytelling, and nothing will stray from the mythology of the movies.

Walt Disney Imagineering executive Scott Trowbridge, supervising both parks, has talked about his intent with the new land: “…to make it feel as if you just walked into one of our movies … Bringing Star Wars to life in the physical world gives us the opportunity to play with a whole bunch of things we’ve never done before … to really engage all of the senses. What does that street feel like? What does that animal smell like? What does the blue milk taste like?”

Concept art depicts a full-size Millennium falcon among alien buildings built into tall cliffs. Star Wars Land promises at least two new attractions, including one that will allow riders to control the Millennium Falcon, and another letting guests experience the battle between the First Order and the Resistance. A version of the cantina is also promised.

We’ve included concept art for the parks for your viewing pleasure. Rife with detail and incredible vision, we’re excited to see the concept art come to life. Hopefully Star Wars Land lives up to our expectations and delivers an amazing experience.
